The backsplash that lies above the kitchen counter is often one of the most beautiful accents in the room. The tile and design you choose can draw out other features, creating beautiful visual effects. Fontile Kitchen & Bath is one of the premier Italian tile suppliers in the Vancouver area. They have a wide selection of tiles in many colors and textures, allowing you to customize your backsplash.

Lay Out the Tile

Measure to find the center of the area you are working with. Measure from the bottom of the cabinet to the top of the counter. When you’ve found the center, mark the tile that will be used for the center. Once you have the center tile marked, you can begin to lay out the tile and create your design. Subtract approximately a fourth of an inch to allow for the grout.

Cut Your Tiles to the Correct Size

Some of the tiles will have to be cut to fit. As you lay out the kitchen backsplash, cut the tiles as you go and place them where they need to be. Make sure each tile is cut prior to applying the mastic.

Apply the Mastic and Begin to Place theTile

Beginning at the center of the backsplash, apply the mastic with a notched trowel or edged putty knife. Place the first tile and maneuver it until it is where it needs to be. Add spacers around each edge to allow for grouting. Continue to apply the mastic, tiles, and spacers in an outward direction.

Remove the Spacers and Apply the Grout

Leave the tiles set overnight. This gives the mastic enough time to start to cure. Once you mix the grout, you can apply it to the tiles with a float or small squeegee. Remove the spacers as you go and completely fill in the channels between the tiles. Allow the grout to cure overnight. In the morning, the excess can be easily wiped away.
